Purpose of Poverty Nodes

My major discipline is in health informatics. I have just started this new blogging site on poverty nodes. The purpose of this Blog is to extend the reaches of social marketing as an additional instrument for tackling poverty. The concept of social marketing as described by Philip R. Kotler and Nancy R. Lee (2009) is to “Lay out a compelling case for the power of social marketing to promote social change and to address itself to the problems of the poor.” In their book, they vividly make the case for the application of advanced marketing strategies and techniques to the problem of poverty.

The three major social marketing techniques they advocated are: segmentation, targeting, and positioning. These are used to illustrate the diverse conditions of the poor and with the help of case studies they were able to illustrate how these techniques can help the poor escape poverty. But Kotler and Lee (2009) stopped short of currency and the dynamics that are heralded by social media itself.

To this end, poverty nodes brings in a fourth dimension of social marketing – that of Big Data Analytics as an additional instrument for systematically alleviating poverty. Big Data Analytics explores how both structured and mainly unstructured data (such as those derived from social media) impact on business intelligence, policy, information exchange (communication) and marketing among others. For example, the various nodes of poverty may include: avarice, discrimination, ignorance, the marketplace and the distribution of wealth, natural disaster, and war among others – because each radiates an intractable network of new nodes. However one defines them the poverty nodes are many and varied. The good news is that much of these can be tracked by the social networks.

Poverty is something is a very serious public health problem globally but more pronounced in the third world nations. It is very disheartening that majority of individuals cannot afford to live comfortably, people are dying of hunger as we speak especially children, lack of medical attention leading to untimely death. Why is that the richer are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. I feel that there must be a way to bridge the gap between the poor and the rich. Everybody deserve to live a decent life irrespective of racial/ethical background, socioeconomic status, educational levels to mention but a few. When I visited Nigeria, I saw a lot of people lavishing money while others cannot afford a bite to eat. Some people are just existing while others are living a perfect life. What a tragedy.

Again, Stella, you are right – the gulf between the rich and the poor is of great concern. In fact, I will soon be posting a blog on that topic and I hope more people will add their voices. The major goal of this blog site is to continue addressing the issue of poverty and seeking channels of reduction. Thanks again
